Masks were once only suggested for people who knew they had COVID-19 and wanted to shield those around them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded its recommendations after it was discovered that the virus can be transmitted by people before they experience symptoms (pre-symptomatic) and by people who never develop symptoms (asymptomatic).
